Consultation on Proposed Expansion of The Khalsa Academy Wolverhampton and Establishment of a SEND Unit
Overview
ONE Multi Academies Trust is consulting on two proposed changes at The Khalsa Academy Wolverhampton:
-
A permanent expansion of the academy’s Published Admission Number (PAN)
-
The establishment of a specialist SEND unit for pupils with Speech, Language and Communication needs
The Trust is seeking the views of stakeholders before submitting a Significant Change application to the Department for Education.
Why Is This Proposal Being Made?
Wolverhampton is experiencing:
-
Increasing demand for secondary school places, particularly in the south of the city
-
Growing need for specialist SEND provision at secondary level
The Khalsa Academy Wolverhampton has previously admitted pupils above its Published Admission Number to support local demand. The proposed changes would formalise and sustainably plan for this growth.
What Is Being Proposed?
1. Expansion of Mainstream Provision
From September 2027, it is proposed that:
-
The Year 7 Published Admission Number (PAN) increases from 120 to 150 pupils
-
This would provide 30 additional places per year group
-
The academy would grow incrementally to a capacity of 750 pupils in Years 7–11 by September 2031
-
Total capacity, including sixth form, would be 990 pupils
2. Establishment of a SEND Unit
From September 2027, it is proposed that:
-
A SEND unit for pupils with Speech, Language and Communication needs is established
-
The unit will initially provide 10 commissioned places
-
This may rise to 20 places in subsequent years
-
All places will be commissioned by the Local Authority
Accommodation and Site Arrangements
To support the proposed expansion:
-
Refurbishment works are planned on recently acquired estate adjacent to the current campus (subject to approval)
-
The development will ensure appropriate teaching and support facilities
-
The Council’s Highways Team will assess traffic and road safety implications as part of the planning process
Consultation Period
The consultation runs from:
