Statement of Intent

Through a strong culture of excellence and standards, underpinned by Universal Sikh and British values, “Together As One” we will instil a love for learning and nurture all our pupils to:

  • Become fluent with the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice over time.
  • Develop resilience to problem solve and apply mathematics to real-world situations.
  • Be confident to take risks within lessons to facilitate their learning.

Curriculum Vision:

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, pupils develop a secure foundation in the core areas of mathematics. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, enabling pupils to make connections between mathematical concepts and apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.

Key areas of study include:

  • Number and calculation
  • Algebra
  • Ratio, proportion and rates of change
  • Geometry and measures
  • Probability
  • Statistics

Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their methods and develop confidence in tackling increasingly challenging mathematical problems.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, all pupils follow the GCSE Mathematics Edexcel Syllabus. Building upon prior learning, pupils deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts whilst developing the skills required for examination success and future study.

Key areas of study include:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio, proportion and rates of change
  • Geometry and measures
  • Probability
  • Statistics

The curriculum places a strong emphasis on mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and the application of mathematics to real-life situations, including financial mathematics and decision-making.

Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5, students can study A Level Mathematics (Edexcel Syllabus), which provides a rigorous and challenging course that extends mathematical knowledge and understanding beyond GCSE.

The course includes:

  • Pure Mathematics, including algebra, functions, trigonometry and calculus
  • Statistics
  • Mathematical modelling and interpretation
  • Advanced problem solving and reasoning

Students develop analytical, logical and independent learning skills that support progression to higher education and careers in mathematics, science, engineering, technology, finance and other related fields.

Enrichment Activities

To foster a love of mathematics beyond the classroom, pupils are provided with opportunities to engage in a range of enrichment activities, including:

  • Mathematics clubs and intervention sessions
  • Challenge and problem-solving activities
  • Educational visits and enrichment events
  • Cross-curricular links with Science and Computing
  • Financial literacy activities
  • Careers education linked to mathematics and STEM pathways

These opportunities help pupils to appreciate the relevance and value of mathematics in everyday life and future careers.

Further Information

  • Mathematics is taught through a mastery approach, ensuring pupils develop both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding.
  • Regular retrieval practice supports long-term retention of knowledge.
  • Pupils are encouraged to develop resilience, independence and confidence when tackling unfamiliar problems.
  • The curriculum is designed to be ambitious, inclusive and accessible for all learners.
  • Mathematical literacy and numeracy skills are developed to prepare pupils for further education, employment and everyday life.
